Cosmeceutical a new word in beauty

When you hear the word cosmeceutical what do you think of?  If you are like me you thought of two words, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.  However you may see the term recognized more with the natural ingredients than with synthetic (man-made) ingredients. Ester-C-Cream Janet Poveromo with Vitamin Retailer Magazine defines them this way, “Cosmeceuticals – Topical beauty products that contain active ingredients or technologies that provide added skin benefits.”  This article will be referring to a broad overview of natural topical beauty products.

Whether you have heard of the term cosmeceutical or not, you have undoubtedly been exposed to them in one form or the other.  You may have seen an advertisement for them or they may be in your home but there is an increase of awareness for these products.  Yet despite this growing fascination with these products, the United States lags behind other countries in Europe or Asia who are more quickly adopting the “beauty-from-within” concept.  One reason for this may be that cosmeceuticals may not provide instant results which Americans are accustomed to.

So what exactly are natural cosmeceuticals?  They are topical beauty products that contain natural ingredients like; acids, antioxidants, botanicals, enzymes, proteins, etc.  Examples include Vitamin C cream or Vitamin E ointments.  There has also been a large increase in EFA’s (essential fatty acids) in cosmeceuticals.  These can include Omega’s 3, 6, and 9 from various sources.  Not only are the fatty acids good for the heart and the brain, but the skin as well.

Although there are benefits to using natural skin care products, the industry is self-regulated so it is important to do your homework to determine the most ethical and safest products.  There are companies who test products to high standards, though the FDA does not require them.  One such company, Aubrey Organics has been setting new standards for years.  The company, founded by Aubrey Hampton 40 years ago, became the first personal care manufacturer to be certified as an organic processor by Quality Assurance International in 1994.  With cosmeceutials becoming more popular, companies with lower or no standards may increase so look for companies that have a good reputation and track record.
