When you hear the word cosmeceutical what do you think of? If you are like me you thought of two words, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. However you may see the term recognized more with the natural ingredients than with synthetic (man-made) ingredients.
Janet Poveromo with Vitamin Retailer Magazine defines them this way, “Cosmeceuticals – Topical beauty products that contain active ingredients or technologies that provide added skin benefits.” This article will be referring to a broad overview of natural topical beauty products.
Whether you have heard of the term cosmeceutical or not, you have undoubtedly been exposed to them in one form or the other. You may have seen an advertisement for them or they may be in your home but there is an increase of awareness for these products. Yet despite this growing fascination with these products, the United States lags behind other countries in Europe or Asia who are more quickly adopting the “beauty-from-within” concept. One reason for this may be that cosmeceuticals may not provide instant results which Americans are accustomed to.
So what exactly are natural cosmeceuticals? They are topical beauty products that contain natural ingredients like; acids, antioxidants, botanicals, enzymes, proteins, etc. Examples include Vitamin C cream or Vitamin E ointments. There has also been a large increase in EFA’s (essential fatty acids) in cosmeceuticals. These can include Omega’s 3, 6, and 9 from various sources. Not only are the fatty acids good for the heart and the brain, but the skin as well.
Although there are benefits to using natural skin care products, the industry is self-regulated so it is important to do your homework to determine the most ethical and safest products. There are companies who test products to high standards, though the FDA does not require them. One such company, Aubrey Organics has been setting new standards for years. The company, founded by Aubrey Hampton 40 years ago, became the first personal care manufacturer to be certified as an organic processor by Quality Assurance International in 1994. With cosmeceutials becoming more popular, companies with lower or no standards may increase so look for companies that have a good reputation and track record.

There is an old saying “it must be in the water” and although it may refer to many things, for residents of Seymour, Seiverville, South Knoxville, and surrounding areas it refers to high pH balanced alkaline ionized water. What these residents know that you may not is that water with a high pH, is in many ways, more beneficial thanregular tap or well water. The water I am referring to is Alkaline High pH Ionized mineral water and the brand we trust is Hydrate High pH water from Historic Springs.
Some of the benefits of Hydrate High pH water include; a pH over 9.5, natural minerals, and it comes from the natural springs of Dandridge, TN. Neutral water has a pH of 7.0. Anything less than 7.0 is considered acidic, above 7.0 is alkaline. If your body is acidic, there is a greater chance for disease to survive and thrive than in a more alkaline body. Some bottled water has minerals added to enhance the taste. That means that those minerals were at one time removed then added back. Our bodies need vitamins and minerals to preform at optimal levels. Hydrate High pH water includes natural minerals because it comes from a natural source in Tennessee. The family in Dandridge micro-filters and puts the water into ultra-violet lights to insure the water is safe without removing the natural minerals.

This weekend millions of people will be celebrating the love they have for each other; but did you know that this month is also American Heart Month. According to the American Heart Association’s website, “Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are our nation’s No. 1 killer.” While you know that diet and exercise are key elements in preventing these diseases, you may not realize that there are vitamins and minerals that can support the heart as well.
Here are a few suggestions you want to consider in choosing which vitamins and minerals may be best for you. Choose a formula that has chelated minerals. Chelated minerals may be a little more expensive, their absorption rate tends to be higher. Also pick one that helps support balanced calcium, acid, and alkalinity in the body. Antioxidants and magnesium are vitamins and minerals that may support the heart. And last but not least find a formula that supports the liver. You will want to find supplements that support the flow of bile and fats which might include; beta-sitosterol, methionine, and betaine. There are different heart healthy formulas out there, contact us to talk about which one may work for best for you.

So, it’s the middle of January. Have you made a pact with yourself to start losing weight by dieting and exercising daily? Well, whether you have kept your pact, broken it, or still haven’t made one yet; we hope to help with a few tips.
Purpose within yourself to truly want to better your life. You might be motivated by knowing that the Lord wants you to be healthy. Having a healthy body cannot be forced on you but it is a choice you have to make and keep. Surround yourself with positive, encouraging people during this time, especially in the beginning. When you have one more mile to walk, or one more exercise set to complete, those positive people around you will help you achieve your goals. Also, get rid of the negative influences, whatever they may be. These will only bring you down and will not help you meet your healthy weight loss goals.
Also, seek outside help and advice. Join a gym that has programs that fit your goals. There are numerous gyms in our area and some of them may offer a reduced price in January. Get involved with a local sports league or start one if none are available. Talk to a personal trainer, your practitioner, or stop by and talk to us. There are many experts in our community that would love to help you with ideas to become healthy in a natural way.

A hot topic in the news today is health care reform. For years politicians, insurance companies, medical practitioners, and the public have been talking about the necessary changes that need to be made to our current health care system. Some say we need stricter rules for pharmaceutical companies, others say we need affordable health care but in truth the most economical way to be healthy is proactive preventative health.
So what is preventative health care? By this we mean taking supplements, eating the right foods, and exercising daily. By doing this today we may avoid many of the disorders that are so costly to our health care system. Here are some examples. Taking a probiotic daily can help to alleviate acid reflux, put healthy bacteria back into your digestive system, and boost your immune system. Fish oil has been shown to help with the cardiovascular system, brain function, and lubrication of the joints. Taking the right vitamins and minerals can help to keep your whole body functioning at peak condition.
